Here are a few things I recommend taking with you and I’ve added more details later in the post.

Where to park for the hike to the Tree of Life in Curacao

Here are the coordinates to use for getting there: 12°19’35.1″N 69°08’45.2″W

That will take you to the dead end street where you can park and start the trail.

There’s no parking lot, you just need to park off the side of the road and not block any driveways.

For the start of the trail, you basically walk into the bushes at the end of the street. You’ll see a path and sign there so just keep a look out for those.

What to expect on the hike

The trail is mostly flat with a little incline towards the end and the terrain is dirt and rock.

I’d rate it as a beginner trail in terms of skill level and fitness.

Even though you’re walking through the bush, the path is quite clear and easy to follow.

While you’re observing your scenic surroundings, keep an eye out for aloe vera, giant cacti, and other pretty plants.

It’s a relatively short hike, taking about 15-30 minutes each way depending on your pace. If you like to stop and take photos a lot or look at the plants or ruins, I’d allow at least 30 minutes each way.

The tree itself looks like something out of a Disney movie. I don’t know how to describe it but it was sits so perfectly on the hill and just has a magic to it.

The views from the tree are stunning and it’s a nice spot for a picnic lunch before heading back and hitting the beach.

Safety tips for hiking to the Tree of Life

There are a couple of things to keep in mind to make sure your hike is an enjoyable one.

Firstly, the path can be overgrown with shrubs that have a lot of thorns on them. For this reason you might want to have long pants to add a little protection for your legs. I love these lightweight hiking pants because they will give you coverage but the fabric is light and breathable so you won’t be overheating.

In saying that, I did the hike in shorts and didn’t get any major scratches or cuts.

I think the most important thing is to be aware of the thorny branches and pay attention to where you’re walking. If you take it slow you can avoid getting scratched up.

Another thing you want to keep in mind is footwear. The thorny bushes are also on the ground and very easy to step on, especially around the ruins. They’re quite long so you want a thick-ish sole for your shoes.

The walk up to the tree itself is a short but steep rocky climb, so shoes that have good grip are helpful if you are a beginner hiker.

I recommend these lightweight hiking shoes or, if you prefer sandals, these are my favorite. Either would be good for this hike.

The bees at the Tree of Life in Curacao

One thing to be aware of at the tree itself is that there are wasps/bees living in it. I’m not sure of the exact species because I didn’t look close enough, but there’s definitely a lot of them in the tree trunk.

Just wanted to let you know in case you have any allergies to these types of animals.

I was able to be close to the tree and I didn’t get stung, but I certainly wouldn’t be provoking them. We don’t want you ending up like Thomas J – if you get that reference, let’s be friends.

Newtown Mine ruins

The tree is not the only highlight of this hike. You can also stop to explore some mine ruins along the way.

As you’re walking into the hike just keep an eye out on your right side. They’re close enough to the trail that they stand out amongst the vegetation and you’ll be able to spot them and the side trails to get to them quite easily.

They’ve got a cool, creepy abandoned building vibe and add another interesting element to the hike.

What else to do nearby

You can easily do this adventure in between beach hopping and sightseeing. Here are a few of my favorite things to do nearby.

  • Grote Knip – beautiful beach with cliff jumping
  • Klein Knip – another beautiful beach
  • Playa Forti – huge cliff jump, beach, and Restaurant Playa Forti has some great food
  • Santa Martha Bay View Lookout Point – beautiful views and a nice spot for scenic pics

Where to stay in Curacao

I stayed at Coral Estate Luxury Resort and it was fantastic. I don’t often stay in resorts, however I loved that this one was quiet, secure, and out of the way.

It had restaurants, a bakery, tours, and a spa on site so there was everything you need if you’re looking for a relaxing break. I definitely recommend having at least one breakfast there where you can sit by the water with your feet in the sand.

I loved adventuring throughout the day and it was easy to get around the island from the resort.

If you prefer nightlife, you will be better off staying in town because Coral Estate is a little out of the way. I recommend searching Booking.com for accommodation in the town area of Willemstad. Here are a few suggestions:
